What the report counts
Google added the report on 3 June 2026 for some sites, and for all sites on 31 August 2026 (Google). It counts impressions, which Google defines as how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search
. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together (Google).
You can group the numbers by page, country, device or date, and split searches typed as text from searches made with a picture, such as Google Lens. You can export them. If two of your links appear in one answer, the chart counts one impression for your site.
It sits with the other Performance reports in Search Console, and Google's own link opens the generative AI performance report. If it does not show, Google says the usual reason is that the site has had too few impressions in AI answers, or that it has been taken out of them.
What it leaves out
- Clicks. Google counts visits from its AI answers in the main Performance report, mixed in with ordinary results under the Web search type (Google). You cannot see which clicks came from an AI answer.
- The questions. There is no list of what people asked.
- What the answer said. Whether it recommended you, compared you with a rival or got your prices wrong.
- Mentions without a link. It counts links to your site, so an answer that names your brand without linking to you is not counted.
- Which of the two. The report has no view that separates AI Overviews from AI Mode.
- Your competitors. You see your own site only.
- Other assistants. ChatGPT, the Gemini app, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Grok are not in it.
Bing has a report too
Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026, as a public preview. It counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot, in Bing's AI summaries and in some partner services. It also shows a sample of the searches behind those citations, which Google's report does not (Microsoft).
In June 2026 Bing added four more views, also in preview. They sort those searches by intent and by topic, show your share of all citations for a search, and compare one period with another (Microsoft).
| Google Search Console | Bing Webmaster Tools | |
|---|---|---|
| AI answers covered | AI Overviews and AI Mode | Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partners |
| What it counts | Impressions: links to your site that were shown | Citations: your pages that were cited |
| The searches behind it | Not shown | A sample, sorted by intent and topic |
| Clicks | Mixed into the main Performance report | Not in the report |
| What the answer said | Not shown | Not shown |
| Since | June 2026; every site from 31 August 2026 | February 2026, in preview |
A new setting came with it
Search Console also has a new setting, under Settings, called Search generative AI. It can take your site's links and content out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and the AI features in Google Discover. Google says the change takes a few days, does not change how the rest of Search treats your site, and does not stop AI training. A separate setting, Google-Extended, covers training (Google).
Taking your site out means no impressions or visits from those answers. Google adds that content from other sites will still appear in them, and it may appear similar to yours
. For a brand that wants to be named in AI answers, the setting is best left on.
How to use it
- Open both reports once a month and note which pages gained or lost AI impressions or citations.
- Check the same pages' clicks in the main Performance report.
- Ask the questions your customers ask yourself, to see what the answers now say.
- For what the answers say about you, and for the other assistants, you need the answers themselves. Visibian asks your customers' questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok and Claude, and keeps every answer in full. It does not track AI Overviews: Search Console's report covers those. How to measure AI visibility.
